We have extensive experience in logistics and international road transport of freight for the primary sector. In recent years, fruit and vegetable imports (fruit and vegetables) have experienced constant growth due to consumption needs.
Imports of fresh fruit and vegetables in 2021 maintained the upward trend of previous years, with a year-on-year growth of 5.5% in volume and 4.5% in value, amounting to 3.6 million tonnes and 3,258 million euros.
Vegetable imports stood at 1.5 million tonnes (+1%) and 887 million euros (-1%). Potatoes remain the most imported vegetable, with 878,123 tonnes and 225 million euros, although they showed a decline compared to 2020 of 4% in volume and 14% in value. Green beans are also among the most imported vegetables, with 118,264 tonnes and 135 million euros, although they also fell by 10% in volume and 5% in value compared to 2020. In contrast, tomato imports grew strongly in 2021, with an 8% increase in volume and 3% in value, totalling 178,161 tonnes and 156 million euros. It is the vegetable whose imports grew the most in 2021.
With regard to fruit, imports in 2021 rose to 2 million tonnes (+9%) and 2,372 million euros (+6.7%), with a strong growth in avocado, up 22% in volume and 20% in value, totalling 214,202 tonnes and 412 million euros. Similarly, imports of bananas increased strongly in 2021, with 368,770 tonnes (+14%) and 201 million euros (+12.5%); of kiwifruit, with 158,323 tonnes (+15%) and 263 million euros (+12.5%) and of pineapple with 170,379 tonnes (+12.5%) and 116 million euros (+8%). Apple also stands out, since, although with lower growth of 3% in volume and value, it is one of the most purchased fruits abroad with 184,631 tonnes and 156 million euros.
